Overview

This live webinar will discuss best practices and approaches for screening and evaluating patient alcohol use and readiness to change in the outpatient and urgent care settings. It will emphasize the need of interprofessional participation in alcohol use screening and will present models and implementation strategies for healthcare professionals to consider. 

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills; Medical Knowledge and Professionalism. 

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe why interprofessional alcohol use screening and treatment of AUD in outpatient and urgent care settings is important for patient care and public health.
  2. Understand a novel and successful evidence-based outpatient care model of education and quality improvement to support and empower health care professionals (HCPs) to address the risk of alcohol consumption and AUD among patients.
  3. Apply best practice approaches for screening and evaluating patients’ alcohol use and readiness to change including the following approaches: TIC, destigmatizing languageand behavior, MI and cultural humility.
  4. List the medications for AUD.

    Brendan Prast, MD, MPH

    Brendan Prast is a Family and Preventive Medicine physician at MaineHealth Primary Care in Sanford, Maine, and is appointed as clinical faculty at MaineHealth Institute for Research. He also serves as an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine for Tufts University School of Medicine and the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine. He serves on the Advisory Committee of the Lunder Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine Time to Ask Advisory Committee where he provides guidance as a subject matter expert on Alcohol Use Disorder.

    He graduated from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and completed his family medicine residency and general preventive medicine fellowship at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland. In addition, he completed a Masters of Public Health at the University of New England. His career interests include disease prevention, substance use disorders, immigrant healthcare, and population-based research. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Maine Academy of Family Physicians and is the immediate past president of the American Heart Association in Maine

    Labrini Nelligan, MS

    Labrini I. Nelligan serves as Executive Director, Lunder Learning Partnerships at the Peter L. Slavin, MD Academy for Applied Learning in Health Care at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Labrini is responsible for a portfolio of institutional activities to advance the programs managed by the Office of the Chief Learning Officer. Areas of focus for Labrini include strategic planning and integration; educational partnerships and strategy; communications outreach and community affairs; and business development and fundraising.

    Since 2012, Labrini has served as the Executive Director of the Lunder-Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine (Lunder-Dineen), a one-of-a-kind health education/quality improvement program that links MGH with a neighboring state. Lunder-Dineen is charged with improving the health of Maine residents by addressing gaps in continuing education and public health by advancing the skills and expertise of health care professionals in these areas. Signature programs include: the Maine Nursing Preceptor Education Program, the MOTIVATE program on oral health for older adults and the Time to Ask program on unhealthy alcohol use, all of which have captured national attention for their innovative, interprofessional approach to addressing health education gaps. As of 2025, over 150 organizations across settings in Maine have participated in Lunder-Dineen programs.

    Denise O’Connell, MSW, LCSW, CCM

    Denise O’Connell, MSW, LCSW, CCM is the Associate Director of the Lunder-Dineen Health Education Alliance of Maine, a program of Massachusetts General Hospital and the Peter L. Slavin, MD Academy for Applied Learning in Health Care. With decades of experience working directly with and leading healthcare providers across care settings, for the past 15 years, Denise has specialized in coaching teams on integrating evidence-based approaches to alcohol screening and intervention into their practice through innovative online learning and a review of practice support tools. The lessons and strategies from this work have informed and strengthened other public health and professional development education programs she leads.

    A licensed clinical social worker and certified case manager, Denise has been a principle at Lunder-Dineen since 2011, developing stakeholder-informed professional development programs that address critical public health challenges. Her role combines relationship-building with coaching and implementation support to optimize program impact in diverse healthcare settings.

    Denise is a recognized presenter at national, regional, and local forums and a co-author of scholarly publications related to health education and program outcomes. She is a past president of the Maine Chapter of the Society for Social Work Leadership in Health Care and a two-time recipient of their Social Work Leader of the Year Award. Currently, she contributes her expertise to the Maine Nurse Action Coalition, statewide alcohol prevention workgroups, and serves on the board of Unlimited Solutions.
