Overview
This 1.5-hour, case-based, interactive online module covers the neurobiology of Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome (AWS), outpatient and hospital management of AWS, and patient-centered goal setting.
Gain an in-depth understanding of the assessment, management, and treatment processes for AWS through this comprehensive online module. Designed for both outpatient and hospital-based settings, this case-based, interactive module equips learners with essential knowledge and practical skills for triaging and managing patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal. Discover how to transition patients to evidence-based pharmacotherapy and incorporate adjunct behavioral therapies. Emphasizing individualized care plans, the module provides strategies for effective patient support throughout the withdrawal process.
The target audience for this introductory level activity includes clinical healthcare professionals who prescribe medications in outpatient or inpatient settings.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Examine the neurobiological mechanisms underlying alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
- Recognize the clinical signs, symptoms, and risk factors for alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
- Determine the appropriateness of outpatient or hospital management for a given patient with alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
- Develop a comprehensive treatment plan for a patient with alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
- Create patient-centered goals for individuals with alcohol use disorder.

MD, FASAM
Shawn Cohen, MD, FASAM is an Instructor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine whose primary clinical responsibilities are on the Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Service. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. He has an interest in improving care in the hospital for people who use drugs, low barrier outpatient care, and low dose initiation of buprenorphine.

Stephen Holt
MD, MS, FACP
Stephen Holt, MD, MS, FACP has been an attending physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital since 2008 and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Yale Addiction Recovery Clinic and the Associate Program Director for Yale's Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program. He is board-certified in Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine. He has published and lectures frequently on a variety of addiction medicine topics, and has won numerous teaching awards at the local, regional, and national level.

MD, MPH
Tessa Steel, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor, physician-scientist, and Pulmonary Critical Care Medicine doctor at Harborview Medical Center, a county safety-net hospital operated by the University of Washington in Seattle. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. Her clinical and research interests include improving hospital-based treatments for alcohol withdrawal syndrome and using hospitalizations to help people with addiction launch their process of recovery.

Alyssa Peterkin, MD is an Instructor of Medicine Boston University School of Medicine and an internist at Boston Medical Center. Currently, she also serves as an associate program director for Grayken Addiction Medicine fellowship. She spends her clinical time working as a hospitalist, attending on the inpatient addiction consultation service and working in the substance use disorder urgent care.
