Beyond the Liver: Understanding Alcohol’s Impact on Hematologic Function
Host: The National Council on Mental Wellbeing
Recorded: August 4, 2026
Enduring Training
Overview
This training explores how alcohol disrupts blood cell production and function, including bone marrow toxicity, impaired nutrient absorption, increased bleeding risk, and increased vulnerability to infection. Because clinicians frequently encounter these hematologic abnormalities without a clear underlying cause, understanding alcohol's role can improve diagnosis, inform treatment decisions, and support more effective patient management. Participants will learn how alcohol affects blood cells and platelets, recognize common hematologic complications associated with alcohol use, and apply these insights to enhance clinical assessment and care.
The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals.
The ACGME Competencies include: Medical Knowledge, Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Identify how alcohol affects red cells, white cells, and platelets.
- Recognize common hematologic complications linked to alcohol use.
- Apply clinical insights to improve patient assessment and management.
- Registration Deadline: 08/30/2027
