Overview
Through case-based scenarios, the presenters explore how stigma and individual experiences shape patient behavior and engagement with alcohol use treatment. The discussion incorporates the Stages of Change model, helping providers and counselors assess readiness for change and tailor interventions accordingly. The session focuses on strategies for healthcare professionals to build trust and effectively engage with patients struggling with alcohol use. It emphasizes core principles such as health and dignity, participant-centered services, patient involvement and autonomy, socio-cultural factors, and pragmatism as a framework for addressing alcohol use disorder (AUD) in practice.
This course is not eligible for credit.
The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals.
The ACGME Competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, and Systems-based Practice
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Describe principles to reduce the risk of harm.
- Learn how to build trust and connect with patients who are struggling with their alochol use.
