Overview
This 75-minute discussion uses case-based examples to explore clinical approaches for treating Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) and Tobacco Use Disorder (TUD) simultaneously. It covers medication options such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT), bupropion, and varenicline, alongside behavioral strategies like motivational interviewing and counseling techniques to reduce the risk of harm. Special attention is given to the unique needs of patients with serious mental illness when addressing co-occurring AUD and TUD. Learners gain a deeper understanding of anti-craving medications and how to support proper use in diverse patient populations.
This course is not eligible for credit.
The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals.
The ACGME Competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, Medical Knowledge, and Systems-based Practice
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Understand the general approach to integrated treatment of tobacco use disorder (TUD) and other behavioral health conditons.
- Understand the appraoch to treatment of co-occurring TUD and AUD.
- Gain a more sophisticated working knowledge of medication treatment approaches for TUD.
