Integrating Alcohol Use Disorder Assessment and Treatment into Carceral Settings

Overview 

In this module, you gain essential insights into managing alcohol use disorder (AUD) in carceral settings. You learn to apply evidence-based practices and develop the skills needed to improve patient outcomes during incarceration. You explore the importance of early identification, appropriate use of medications within institutional constraints, and the management of co-occurring conditions. The module helps you understand how to collaborate effectively with both healthcare and non-healthcare staff by clarifying the roles of all stakeholders involved in comprehensive care. You also examine key ethical considerations and the value of an interdisciplinary approach to assessment, treatment, and continuity of care upon reentry. As you apply these skills in your practice, remember that providing effective, compassionate care for incarcerated individuals with AUD can lead to meaningful and lasting improvements in their health and rehabilitation.

The target audience for this activity includes all clinical healthcare professionals.

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care and Procedural Skills; Medical Knowledge and Professionalism.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to: 

  1. Describe the prevalence and epidemiology of alcohol use disorder (AUD) as well as person-first language and other preferred terminology in regard to carceral settings.  
  2. Select and apply evidence-based screening and assessment tools for identifying AUD in carceral populations. 
  3. Review the range of differential diagnosis, which includes both acute and long-term conditions related to AUD, such as withdrawal, delirium from other causes, and other medical or mental health conditions.
  4. Recognize the effectiveness of medications, the appropriate timing of their administration, and demonstrate the ability to safely prescribe medications for alcohol use disorder (AUD) in carceral settings.
  5. Determine counseling strategies for discussing MAUD and other AUD treatments with patients.
  6. Identify effective collaborative approaches when working with interdisciplinary teams to develop and deliver comprehensive treatment plans as well as address contextual challenges of alcohol use disorder in carceral settings.
