Overview

This 75-minute case-based discussion explores the many ways families influence a loved one’s recovery journey, including how stigma, family culture, and boundaries can help or hinder progress. It examines how to assess family dynamics, offer clear and appropriate education about AUD treatment options, and connect families with supportive resources such as Family Resource Centers, Recovery Community Organizations, and mutual aid groups. The presenter offers guidance on how to frame your role as a practitioner/provider and assess ethics and engagement strategies.

The target audience for this introductory level activity includes: All types of healthcare professionals. 

The ACGME Competencies include: Patient Care and Procedural Skills, and Systems-based Practice

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Assess the role of family involvement in recovery, including identifying when family dynamics support or hinder treatment outcomes.
  2. Describe the impact of stigma, family culture, and boundaries on individuals with AUD and their family systems.
  3. Provide accurate, appropriate education about medical AUD support options to family members as clinically and ethically appropriate.
  4. Identify and refer to family and patient support resources, including Family Resource Centers, Recovery Community Organizations, and mutual aid groups.
