She has been highly involved in the education of colleagues and trainees, and she is the fellowship director for the UCSD Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship. John is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor working as the Social Worker for the Yale Addiction Medicine Consult Service where he provides clinical support for patients who suffer from serious medical problems related to substance abuse disorders. He has been at Yale since 2022 and also works as a clinician in group practice where he focuses on clients with AUD. His education includes a Drug and Alcohol Recovery Counselor (DARC) Certificate from Gateway Community College and an MSW from Southern Connecticut State University, as well as a BS in Marketing and MBA from Ball State University. Eve Lasswell, PsyD, is a licensed clinical psychologist who treats adults with substance use and co-occurring disorders. Dr. Lasswell is part of UC San Diego Health's Substance Treatment and Recovery program, which uses a harm-reduction approach to provide care for all stages of recovery from substance use disorders. She treats patients with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders ad helps adults recover from addiction by encouraging behaviors that build wellness and emotional resilience.
In addition, she has experience helping people with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety, as well as concerns related to role transitions and interpersonal relationships.
Dr. Lasswell also has experience providing care to diverse patient populations, including those with ethnic backgrounds different from her own, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and current and former members of the US military.
Her research aims to improve outcomes for people with substance use disorders, and improve access to mental health services for the underserved.
Dr. Lasswell is Board-Certified in Addiction Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in addiction treatment at Veterans Affairs Salt Lake City Health Care System. Overview
Discussing alcohol use with patients can be challenging, especially when trying to balance clinical guidance with empathy, respect, and motivational interviewing techniques. This 30-minute learning experience uses an AI-powered conversation tool to help clinicians practice empathetic, motivational interviewing techniques when discussing risky alcohol behaviors with patients.
This tool is grounded in the FRAMES model and supports skill-building in brief, 10-minute interventions to promote patients' behavior change. After a brief overview of motivational interviewing and the FRAMES model, learners engage in realistic scenarios with three virtual AI patients and receive personalized feedback to support ongoing improvement.
The target audience for this activity includes physicians, nurse practitioners and nurses, pharmacists, and physician associates (PAs).
This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Practice-based Learning and Improvement, and Professionalism.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, learners will be able to:
- Improve comfort and ability to have empathetic patient conversations around alcohol use.
- Understand the principles and techniques of motivational interviewing.
- Apply motivational interviewing techniques, including the FRAMES model (Feedback, Responsibility, Advice, Menu of options, Empathy, Self-efficacy), during a patient interaction.
- Support patients to create personalized, judgment-free goals for reducing or managing alcohol use.

Stephen Holt, MD, MS, FACP has been an attending physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital since 2008 and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Yale Addiction Recovery Clinic and the Associate Program Director for Yale's Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program. He is board-certified in Addiction Medicine and Internal Medicine.
